Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ: META) moves down 1.18% in pre trading session on Monday as IBM has paused building of two data centers in Odense, Denmark, and will instead focus on a new form of data center used for artificial intelligence (AI), a spokeswoman explained.
Facebook-owner Meta already has two huge data centers in Odense, but just one of the three additional centers now under building there will be finished.
Meta spokesperson Peter Münster told Reuters, “Over the past month, we have announced a number of measures to make us a more streamlined organization”.
“A big component of these initiatives is to reallocate a greater portion of our resources to high-priority development sectors, including a strategic investment in artificial intelligence,” he stated.
Last month, Meta indicated it will lose 11,000 positions, the first in the company’s 18-year existence, after unsatisfactory results in many quarters. The company’s traditional data centers host servers for apps such as Facebook and Instagram.
In August, construction on the two stalled data centers in Odense began. However, Meta cancelled the 2.4 billion Danish crown ($344 million) contract with contracting business Per Aarsleff on Tuesday.
Meta Platforms, Inc. (META) has partnered with Silicon Ranch For Solar Projects
Meta Platforms, Inc. (META) announced seven new solar projects totalling 720 megawatts (MWAC) in Georgia and Tennessee to provide 100% renewable energy to its regional businesses. Silicon Ranch, one of the country’s largest independent power producers, is teaming up with Walton Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to deliver sustainable energy to Meta’s data centers in Georgia and the Tennessee Valley. As part of the agreements, Silicon Ranch will fund, build, own, operate, and maintain the solar facilities for each of the seven projects during their lifetimes, bringing significant investment to rural communities around the region.
Each of the solar installations that will feed Meta will employ Silicon Ranch’s transformative Regenerative Energy land management technique, a holistic plan that combines renewable energy generation and regenerative agricultural practices.
Walton EMC in Georgia has concluded contracts with Silicon Ranch on behalf of Meta (formerly the Facebook business) for three additional solar arrays totaling 560 MWAC, as part of the electric cooperative’s vow to supply Meta with 100% sustainable energy. Over the next three years, Silicon Ranch will work with Walton EMC to develop projects to support Meta’s operations.
